Ayr United face selection crisis as up to nine players set to miss Wrexham cup clash

Ayr United face a selection crisis ahead of Saturday's trip to Wales - with up to NINE first team stars sidelined.

International call-ups and a mounting injury list has left boss Ian McCall with a skeleton squad for the trip south.

The Honest Men take on Wrexham in the third round of the Tunnock's Caramel Wafer Cup - the club's first ever game in Wales.

But they will go without Scotland stars Ross Doohan, Danny Harvie and Stephen Kelly who are all on international duty with Scott Gemmill's kids.

Andy Murdoch, Craig McGuffie, Frank Ross and Craig Moore are all injured while new boy Jordan Houston is cup tied.

And centre half Jamie Adams is unlikely to be risked for the marathon trip.

McCall told the Ayrshire Post: "I’m not going to hide what our priorities are this season.

“But that said, we want to go down there and win.

“It’s going to be difficult because, in my opinion, we go there without the best goalkeeper, midfielder and left back in the Championship.

“But the lads who come in have a big chance and I’m sure they won’t let us down."

Ayr will travel south on Friday ahead of the historic clash at the Racecourse Ground.

McCall added: "We’ll look at switching a few things around and giving it a good go.

“It’s going to be a great day out for the club and our supporters who are always fantastic away from home.”
