Ayr United chairman Lachlan Cameron pledges club will do "whatever it takes" to survive Covid cash crisis

Ayr United chairman Lachlan Cameron insists his club will do "whatever it takes" to weather the Covid-19 storm.

The owner admits a year without supporters at Somerset Park would have a devastating impact on finances.

But he pledged to stop the club from going under - and called on government help for ailing teams across the country.

Speaking on BBC Sportsound tonight, Lachlan said: "We don't think we can go through the whole season without any fans or revenue from elsewhere.

"So if we could use help from the government or SFA or whoever it may be, of course we would.

"But we'll do whatever it takes at Ayr United to make sure we're here at the start of next season."

When asked about the prospect of clubs below the Premiership going into hibernation for a season, Cameron ruled out such a move.

He said: "I don't know how you can do that when you've signed players to contracts.

"If you go into hibernation, you're making tons of people redundant straight off the bat.

"The Premiership can probably survive off the TV money up there.

"And Leagues One and Two are dealing with lower budgets at their level.

"But the Championship is in a sweet spot in terms of being most vulnerable.

"We rely so heavily off gate income and without that will struggle badly."

Cameron added: "I'm not a big believer in asking for government income but they are the ones mandating we can't play.

"I don't think it's unreasonable to ask for help from them in this instance.

"I also don't think the government should dictate every aspect of our lives.

"We as a country and a people have to drive on and look forward.

"If we don't get supporters back and income back through the gates then a lot of these clubs are going to go to the wall."
