Ayr United chairman David Smith issues emotional statement in wake of 'embarrassing' defeat at Arbroath

Ayr owner David Smith has branded yesterday's thrashing at Arbroath "embarrassing, unacceptable and gut wrenching".

United capitulated in their relegation showdown, leaving new boss David Hopkin questioning the fight of his squad in their battle to survive.

Now Smith, who took ownership of the club in January and appointed Hopkin, has spoken out this morning in an emotional Tweet.

He said: "Yesterday was embarrassing, unacceptable and gut wrenching.

"As a fan it's a horrible place to be, as a chairman it's one hundred times worse.

"I took this role as I thought I could make a difference and get the club to a better place.

"Off the park I've put in over half a million pounds, positively addressed the financial stability of the club and the cost of the hub will be paid by me personally.

"I've tried to manage things head on using my experience in business and back the football people to get it right on the park.

"The new manager has only been in post 5 weeks and is doing everything he can to get us out of this position.

"He is hurting, I am hurting and everyone else at the club is hurting too.

"I woke up this morning and thought, 'why did I get involved'.

"I could have stayed a fan.

"I could have saved a huge amount of money.

"I could have avoided the kind of messages I received yesterday.

"I could be having a lie in and not be wide awake typing this.

"I could be living my life without the knot I have in the very pit of my stomach that I've had for the last few months.

"The answer I've come up with is that I got involved, firstly to make sure the club could pay its debts (which it couldn't), secondly to try and give something back for all the great times I've had at Somerset and finally to try and build something that we can be proud of.

"Our team deserves a better football club.

"I'm utterly distraught at our position but will continue to do my best."
