Ayr United chairman David Smith happy to play it cool on appointment of new boss

David Smith insists he’s happy to keep playing it cool as Ayr United continue without a permanent boss.

Interim manager Jim Duffy’s three wins in a week have put him firmly in the driving seat to replace David Hopkin.

But Smith is adamant that he and his directors remain in no rush to act.

Duffy will stay in charge for Saturday’s Championship visit of Morton, for whom he both played and managed.

And Smith told the Ayrshire Post: “I’m really comfortable with where we are just now.

“Jim has been the ultimate professional and along with the other coaches has provided us with a huge amount of experience at this time.

“The results have obviously been really positive so long may that continue.”

Saturday’s 2-0 win at Hamilton completed a brilliant week for Duffy, but the caretaker is only looking to his next task.

He said: “I’ve always been someone who looks to the next game – it’s all too easy to look beyond that in football.

“My job has been to keep the players focused, so the results have been pleasing in that respect.

“But we now move on to this Saturday and another difficult game.

“That’s where my focus is at this stage and hopefully we can keep the confidence and momentum going.”

Mikey Hewitt is likely to miss out again as he recovers from a hamstring strain while Nick McAllister and Jordan Houston are also rated highly doubtful.

•United have pledged to learn lessons after being kicked out the SPFL Trust Trophy.

Ayr fielded Kinlay Bilham and Alex Jeanes as late subs in the 3-0 win against Rangers B.

Both are out on loan to West of Scotland League sides and were ineligible as a result.

Hampden beaks turfed Ayr from the competition on Monday.

Chairman Smith said: “We have reviewed all of our processes around player eligibility and lessons will be learned.”
