Mark Kerr insists his Ayr squad has what it takes to turn the tide on their poor form.
A run of one win in nine games has hauled United towards the foot of the Championship.
But Kerr, who admits the team now finds itself in a "horrible" position, says they can get moving again.
He told the Ayrshire Post: "There’s no doubt that with the players we have, we are underachieving to be in the position we are.
"But we’re the ones who have to put that right.
“We’ve put ourselves into this situation."
He added: “There’s no point in me talking all the time about chances we’ve missed in games.
“The fact of the matter is we’re not taking them.

“We now need to step up and stick together as a group.
“The next few weeks aren’t going to be pretty but I know we have the players to get us up the table.
“It is a crazy league this season and we know one or two results changes things completely, as Queen of the South have shown.
“But we cannot keep saying that – we have to go and do it.”
Saturday’s defeat at home to Inverness sent Ayr down to ninth in the table.

And United welcome Championship form horses Arbroath to Somerset this weekend with the Lichties unbeaten in seven.
Kerr said: “It’s simple, we’ve got to go and win games now.
“We’re just killing ourselves by not taking chances.
“I’m still confident in what I have here that we can push up this table.
“I can fully understand the fans looking at this and being frustrated but we will work to get the form back on track.”
