Ayr taxi rank double assault probe as heated argument turns violent

A woman was punched in the face and a male knocked out after a heated argument at an Ayr taxi rank turned violent.

The pair were taken to hospital following the assaults in the town's Smith Street on Saturday night around 11pm.

The woman, aged 30 and not 39 as earlier reported, and 54-year-old man have since been discharged following treatment.

The man had been lying on the pavement after the incident as ambulance crews raced to the scene.

Taxi drivers were diverted to another temporary rank as police locked down the street next to Ayr's railway station.

Cops probing the disturbance want to trace a male suspect described as being in his 20s with dark hair.

Detective Constable Stuart McCulloch said: “Our enquiries into this assault, which appears to have been entirely unprovoked, are ongoing.

“We would appeal to anyone who was in the area at the time and witnessed the incident to come forward if you haven’t already spoken to an officer.

“The incident happened near a taxi rank and a number of vehicles were around at the time so anyone who may have dash-cam footage is urged to get in touch.

“Anyone with information can call 101, quoting incident 4198 of 3 July, or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
