Ayr schoolchildren launch own business as flower power seals the deal at Forehill Primary

Schoolkids have turned entrepreneurs in a bid to run their own business.

Children at Forehill Primary in Ayr are behind the scheme to create and sell their own flower planters.

The primary five pupils have spent weeks researching all aspects of their business from marketing and expenses to running costs and profit and loss.

Teacher Karen McSheffrey revealed: "The children have been using recycled plastic bottles for this so the project is very environmentally friendly.

"To make the experience as real as possible they decided that buying shares would be a way of financing the business.

"They were encouraged to use their own pocket money and have been keeping a very close eye on their investments by completing a budget planner and watching their balances going up and down.

"The children have also discussed profit and loss and the risk factor of buying shares."

The bottles had sections cut out and holes put in the bottom for drainage.

They were then decorated by the children and filled with compost and three small plants inserted.

The children have been caring for them and launched sales this week.

Mrs McSheffrey added: "A few of the children went with me to Morrisons to buy plants and compost.

"They were fantastic ambassadors for Forehill and even managed to negotiate a discount!

"They have worked out a sale price for their products and are now working hard to encourage sales."
