Ayr's Station Hotel owner to challenge South Ayrshire Council over building costs

The absentee owner of Ayr’s Station Hotel is to carry out his own survey of the building.

Eng Huat Ung has been granted court permission to access the crumbling pile.

Council officials are readying their own report on the state of the hotel.

But the Post can reveal Mr Ung will be given the chance to challenge estimates and invoices filed thus far.

A source close to the businessman said: “It is only right and proper that Mr Ung, as the owner, is given sight of the building for himself.

“It is his property and he must be allowed to carry out the due process of his own structural report.”

It comes as the council continues its legal bid to pursue Mr Ung in the courts over work carried out since last year.

Both sides are deadlocked with the businessman claiming he has a new owner lined up waiting to take the helm.

But council chiefs have pledged to block any sale until they receive compensation for remedial works carried out.

The local authority, who along with Network Rail are pursuing Mr Ung through the courts for cash, insist that they will stand firm until the businessman coughs up.

But the source familiar with the deal said: “It is not Mr Ung’s intention to slow this process any which way.

“He wants to see the Station Hotel in new hands.

“However, it’s only right he gets his own chance at a structural report.”

A council spokesman said: “The building is classed as dangerous so access is controlled by our building standards team.

“They will make a decision on future access based on the final structural survey report which will be available this September.”
