Ayr Racecourse in line to stage resumption of horse racing in Scotland behind closed doors

Ayr Racecourse is in line to stage the resumption of horse racing in Scotland behind closed doors next month.

Scottish Racing is in talks with the Scottish Government over bringing back the sport from Monday, June 22.

Ayr has been allocated the date by the British Horseracing Authority as part of 24 fixtures pending approval at Scottish tracks through June, July and August.

If approved, Ayr would hold the first meeting north of the border since racing was suspended on March 17.

Further fixtures are scheduled at Ayr for July 6, July 14, July 20, July 28, August 5 and August 24.

All would take place on the flat.

Fixtures have also been scheduled for Hamilton, Musselburgh and Perth.

Dennis Illey of Scottish Racing said: "The public can have confidence in our ability to race behind closed doors as safely as possible when the government allows more industries back to work.

"As a highly regulated industry we have considerable experience of keeping any potential health and safety risks to an absolute minimum.

"We are fully prepared to stage race meetings in a strictly controlled environment once they decide the time is right to resume racing."
