Ayr mum fears for safety of young girls in town after 'worrying' incidents

A panicked Ayr mum feels her town isn’t safe for teenage girls.

Aimie Burnett doesn’t want to let her kids out of the house now after her daughter fell victim to a park creep who watched her enter her home.

The mum-of-five has had enough of young girls being preyed on in Ayr – and has even warned her children of 'no go zones'.

Last week, a 14-year-old girl was walking home with a friend when they were both followed by a man wearing dark clothes and a baseball cap.

The worrying incident took place just yards from her home near to Glencairn Park in the Forehill area with police launching a probe.

Just days before, another 14-year-old in Ayr was ‘traced safely’ after vanishing for two days with police still investigating the circumstances surrounding her disappearance.

Earlier this month, Ayrshire Live told how a 16-year-old girl was ‘intimidated’ by two 'creepy' men in a BMW as she walked to a beauty appointment.

And last week, a 10-year-old girl was approached by a man in Maybole in another frightening incident.

Ayr’s new top cop has denied any of the incidents are linked but the concerned parent fears it’s only a matter of time before something serious happens – as worried parents share their anxieties on social media.

Aimie, 35, who stays in the Forehill area is calling on the community and police to do more to tackle inappropriate behaviour and protect vulnerable daughters.

She told Ayrshire Live: “Ayr doesn’t feel safe for our children anymore. It’s getting to the stage I just want to keep my children in the house now.

“I am fearing the worst that they will just be taken one night.

“When I was growing up everything was different. You could go out and play without fear.

“It seems like all you hear about now is young girls being approached by men. It is unacceptable behaviour and it has to stop.

“So much stuff is shared on social media that is really concerning when you hear what can actually happen to some of these girls.

"There's places in Ayr I won't let my kids go anywhere near, I wouldn't allow them to go Wallacetown (White City) and Castlehill Woods.

“In the last month there have been so many incidents in Ayr, it is really worrying and it is time communities and police take action.”

Chief Inspector Derrick Johnston told Ayrshire Live: “We are aware of community concerns following a small number of isolated incidents of men allegedly approaching teenage girls in the Ayr area.

"I’d like to reassure the public that extensive enquiries are being carried out into the reports, which are not being treated as linked.

“If anyone has any information or concerns they wish to report, they should call police on 101.”
