Ayr man, 43, found with cannabis in home

A man was found to have a quantity of cannabis in his home in Ayr’s Lochside, writes Edwin Lawrence.

Alan McFarlane, 43, pleaded guilty at Ayr Sheriff Court to possession of the Class B controlled drug.

Depute fiscal Andrew Lazzarin said McFarlane had 8.6 grammes of the drug on January 3.

Street value of the drug was put at £60, although Mr Lazzarin said that might be a bit high.

Defence lawyer John Gallagher said his client was addicted to cannabis, and smoked it before going to bed.

But he said this didn’t impair McFarlane’s ability to go to work in the mornings.

Mr Gallagher said his client had fully co-operated with police officers, and provided the cannabis when asked.Sheriff John Montgomery imposed a fine of £500, payable at £20 per week.

The sheriff said he had discounted the fine from £650, due to McFarlane’s early plea of guilt.
