Ayr joins Black Lives Matter movement

South Ayrshire has joined the worldwide wave of solidarity to show that Black Lives Matter.

The BLM movement has seen protests in major cities across the world including London, Berlin and Paris in response to the murder of George Floyd by police in Minneapolis, US.

And while there were no mass gathering protests in the region, residents demonstrated their support in their own way.

Hundreds have taken to social media to post messages and photos of support- highlighting that racism is still present throughout the UK.

Black Lives Matter was spray painted in graffiti art on the railway bridge at Tam’s Brig in Ayr- a focal point for traffic flowing in and out of the town centre.

Ayrshire Police took the knee to raise awareness of BLM movement.

Chief Superintendent Faroque Hussain posted a picture online of himself and fellow officers kneeling outside Kilmarnock Police Station.

Alongside his photo, The Chief Super said: “Racism has no place in society and together we must eradicate it.”

Their acts join the international human rights movement that campaigns against violence and systemic racism towards black people.
