Ayr International Youth Football Tournament cancelled due to coronavirus crisis

The oldest grassroots football tournament in the UK has become the latest event to call off amid the growing coronavirus crisis.

The 43rd Ayr International youth festival, scheduled for Rozelle between May 22-25, has been axed.

Organisers have also pulled the plug on next month's Scotland Cup Easter tournament at Largs, due to be played on April 11-12.

Bosses confirmed the decisions had been taken tonight "with regret" in response to the spiralling global pandemic.

A spokesman said: "We understand and appreciate the level of disappointment that this will create, however in these unprecedented times of uncertainty we need to act responsibly.

"The health, safety and well-being of everyone is of paramount importance.

"We have a duty of care to the players, team officials, match officials, parents, supporters, tournament volunteers, caterers, sponsors and all who assist over the weekends of the tournaments.

"We are hoping that we will still be able to go ahead with our Land O’Burns event in August but will continue to monitor the overall situation and will make a decision in June."

The first Ayr youth tourney was played in 1978 and is regarded as the third oldest in Europe, attracting around 2000 players each year.

Teams from throughout the UK, Europe, Asia, USA, Canada and beyond have competed down the years with the likes of Paul Gascogine, Alan Shearer and Stevie Nicol taking part.
