Ayr High Street reopened to traffic after blaze which ripped through flats in town centre

Ayr High Street has been reopened to all traffic tonight following a serious fire in the early hours of this morning.

The blaze ripped through flats at the bottom end of the town, causing extensive damage to the roofspace of the building near the Town Hall.

The roof of the building, which sits above the World of Art shop, was gutted by the blaze which broke out at 2.15am.

A large scale emergency response raced to the scene and has been present for much of the day.

Police remain on scene tonight.

A section of footpath remains closed whilst investigations into the fire continue.

Ayr Police Chief Inspector, Brian Anderson, confirmed rescue services had been faced with a "challenging incident" overnight.

A fire service spokesman added: "We were alerted at 2.15am to reports of a fire within a row of terraced building on High Street, Ayr.

"Operations Control mobilised six appliances to the scene."

There were no reports of any injuries.
