Ayr Gaiety cancels Christmas pantomime amid ongoing coronavirus restrictions

There will be no Christmas pantomime at Ayr's Gaiety Theatre this year after bosses confirmed the cancellation of their ‘Sleeping Beauty’ production.

The show has been shelved for a year amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic and concerns that this year's production would be rendered "not viable".

Jeremy Wyatt, Chief Executive of the Gaiety, said: “Our decision to postpone Sleeping Beauty to 2021 is part of the general wave of show cancellations happening up and down the country.

"The current conditions and restrictions make our former plans to present the full-blown annual festive panto this year not viable at all.”

Gaiety chiefs say they are currently seeking funding for an "alternative form" of Christmas event.

It is hoped that recently announced Government funding streams will make their way to Ayrshire and allow the Gaiety to plan for a longer term and gradual reopening of the main stage in 2021.

Mr Wyatt added: “If we can secure funds to underpin a very challenging 2021 then we’ll look forward to presenting a truly spectacular ‘Sleeping Beauty’ for customers to come and see next year at Christmas time 2021.”
