Ayr Craigie skatepark plans to be revisited following online backlash

Council chiefs have gone back to the drawing board over plans for upgrading Ayr's outdoor skatepark – after designs were branded ‘a disaster’.

Ayr MSP Siobhian Brown, who is still serving as a South Ayrshire councillor, released images online of the original proposals for the town's Craigie Park skatepark, on Craigie Road, with opinions welcomed on either designs A or B.

But after being met with a backlash from several skaters who use the park, the council has said they will now revisit the plans.

Claims that the designs only catered to ‘transition skaters’ and not ‘street skaters’ were one of several comments.

Transition skateboarding involves flat ground, ramps and bowls and sees skaters moving from the ground to a ramp or other incline, whereas street skating involves the use of urban obstacles like stairs and their handrails, park benches and other outdoor furniture.

On the original plans, Connor Ferrie commented: “This is purely a transition park. Where’s the street section? Where’s the area for less-experienced skaters?

“This type of park can only have a couple of people skating at one time; crowds of people will be waiting to skate this while waiting for someone to finish their line.

“Neither of these is a park that me or any of the skaters I skate with would skate simply because it is pure transition and no street sections. This needs to be addressed.”

Cammy Wood said: “From a local skateboarder’s point of view, this a disaster.

“The people who actually use the park for its purpose – not a play park – are not being considered here.

“Make something we all want to use.”

Others were happy to see Craigie skatepark was in line for an overhaul.

Mum Kirste Johnston said: “My boys will be buzzing, this is fab!

“I will ask which one they would vote for, yet think they would be delighted either way!”

Lynne Gin added: “We love this idea! More detail on each option would be much appreciated please!”

A South Ayrshire Council spokesperson said: “The original design proposals are now being revisited following some initial feedback.

“Skatepark users can get in touch by emailing Neighbourhood_services@south-ayrshire.gov.uk if they would like further information on the proposals and to leave their comments and suggestions.”
