Ayr chip shop hands out free suppers to the homeless

A fast food champion is chipping in to help the homeless.

Ali Cobanoglu, 55, owns the Lucky Star chippy on George Street in Ayr.

And after being approached by a Blue Triangle project officer Ali agreed to help feed the homeless.

Jason Campbell, 44, works at the housing association which operates a homeless unit in Ayr, providing supported accommodation.

And he revealed he had contacted around ten takeaways in Ayr asking for help for free food, but only the Lucky Star stepped up to the plate.

Jason said: “One Chinese takeaway was actually rude and hung up the phone on me.

“The people here have got nothing except the basics in food, so my idea was to be able to get them a wee treat once in a while.

“It is fantastic that Ali agreed to provide chips and suppers every month.

“Ali was very enthusiastic about it straight away which was great after so many knock backs.

“He was even willing to give money on top of the food.

“Hopefully this can encourage others to come forward.”

Ali moved to Scotland from Turkey in 1984 and has been owner of the Lucky Star for six years.

The generous chip shop boss says he’s popular at the nearby nursing home, church and railway club.

But after being approached by Jason he decided it was time to give something back.

Ali said: “I’m happy to help them because the Lucky Star has been here for many years so it’s good to give something back to the local people.

“It’s just good to do what I can.”

And the chips are going down a treat at the Blue Triangle.

Homeless David Young said: “It’s so nice. When I was younger after the swimming I’d always come here and get fritters and a packet of rainbow drops.

“I’ve always loved it.”
