Ayr becomes a sea of blue and white for separatists

For a historically unionist town, there was a great show of blue and white strength for the break-up of the United Kingdom.

The MP and MSP for Ayr are Conservative unionists happy the way things are.

But, according to who you talk to, there were between ten and thirteen thousand marchers in the town on Saturday.

It was the fourth in a series of pro-independence demonstrations across Scotland.

The event – which was not licenced by South Ayrshire Council – was organised by All Under One Banner.

And anyone who is anybody in the SNP was there including MP Philippa Whitford and beaten Ayr MP Corri Wilson.

The colourful march – which streaked for a mile – was staged in lovely sunshine and climaxed on the Low Green with speeches.

Kids joined in to march with their parents – and some dogs were even clad in saltire gear.

Organiser Neil Mackay said: “The turnout was really big and we’re really happy.

“Everyone was very well behaved and there was such a great spirit at the event.”

Our staff photographer Euan McCall captured the colourful action.
