Ayr bar and grill hopes to bring nightlife scene back to the town centre

A bar owner and one of Ayr’s pioneering DJs are joining forces to bring a bustling nightlife back to the town centre.

Dynamic duo Kerry Callan, owner of No 8 Bar & Grill on Fullarton Street, and DJ Tommy Adams hope their themed music nights and quizzes can give punters a taste of that long anticipated night out now the town has reopened.

Kerry, 40, worked at Boswells for 18 years before realising her dream of owning her own place by taking over the former Camerons Bar venue, previously McCabes, just six weeks before the national lockdown last year.

She said: “We’re trying to get nightlife back.

“It’s been off the map now for a while.

“And then with people not going out due to Covid-19 we’ve not exactly had the best time to bring it back.

“Before the end of Boswells, about three years ago, Wednesday and Thursday nights were student nights again and that’s just totally died down.”

Tommy has been entertaining crowds in Ayr with his top tunes since the 80s and used to DJ six nights a week “back when Ayr was booming”.

He said he is enjoying being back behind the decks once again.

Tommy said: “I’m loving it; we just want to get people through the door.

“On a Saturday night we’re doing 80s, 90s and the noughties, because we’ve been getting told for a long time that Ayr has nothing like that. We call it ‘Through the Decades’.

“We do a fun quiz on a Thursday night at 7.30/8pm, and we’re looking at bringing in a karaoke night too.”

Dog lover Kerry, who has three golden retrievers and two chihuahuas, has also launched a dog menu – complete with doggy beer – for customers’ four-legged friends to enjoy.

“It’s dogtastic,” said Kerry.

She added: “Nowhere was letting dogs in and I thought, we don’t have any carpets and all the tables are far enough apart that they don’t need to be near one another.”
