Ayr army medic Brodie Gillon to be remembered as candles lit around world at 9pm

People across the nation are being urged to join forces in remembering fallen Ayr medic, Brodie Gillon, tonight.

A special event is being held at 9pm where candles will be lit in Brodie's memory.

It follows the death of the Lance Corporal earlier this month in a rocket attack in Iraq.

Brodie, 26, was given full military honours after being repatriated at RAF Brize Norton airbase last week.

Her body is being laid to rest today at a private service.

Now her family are urging candles to be lit in her honour tonight as a touching way of paying tribute.

In a statement online, they said: "Our hearts are irreparably broken at the loss of our beautiful, bright and fun loving Brodie.

"When circumstances dictate we will hold a memorial for Brodie which pays fitting tribute to all she was, but for now we ask you to keep her in your thoughts and care for each other the way she cared for you all.

"She brought immeasurable love, fun and energy to our lives and was so generous in every way.

"She was determined and tenacious, wonderfully funny, courageous and caring.

"Brodie was a force of nature, a strong independent young woman.

"She was fierce, with a strong mind and sensitive soul. Her healing and strength will guide us as we carry on without her, for her.

"Our family would like to thank everyone for their kind thoughts, generosity and support at this difficult time."

The former Belmont Academy pupil, who was a reservist with the Scottish and North Irish Yeomanry, was killed alongside two US soldiers when 18 rockets struck the Camp Taji base.

Her tragic death on Wednesday, March 11 marked the first British female soldier to be killed in Operation Shader - the British non-combat mission to train Iraqi troops how to fight and save lives.
