Ayoze Perez takes a subtle swipe at Newcastle United fans after scoring on St James' Park return

Ayoze Perez said it was "good to see old friends" as he scored on his St James' Park return.

The Leicester forward - sold by Newcastle for £30million in the summer after the Foxes triggered his release clause - opened the scoring at St James' Park in the 3-0 reverse for United .

He had been booed up to that point, just as he had on his first return in the League Cup back in August. And he celebrated with his trademark fingers in his ears celebration, a move that was originally a reaction to some criticism he received from home fans for his underwhelming performances in the first half of last season.

And Perez couldn't resist a subtle dig on social media, saying it was "good to see old friends", followed a smiling face emoji.

In truth it was the least of the worries of Newcastle fans on a day when they suffered a third defeat on the spin and saw their buffer to the bottom three cut to five points. A season that looked on steady ground ten days ago suddenly looks, once again, like it could be a fight against the drop.
