Ayoze Perez set to make decision on Newcastle United future following holiday back in Spain

Ayoze Perez will only make a decision on his Newcastle United future once he returns from holiday this summer - but admits he enjoyed an "unbelievable" end to the season.

The 25-year-old netted 13 goals in all competitions, including 12 in the Premier League, as he delivered his most productive goal-scoring season for the Magpies.

Yet the Spaniard - who harbours hopes of representing his country - has admitted in recent weeks that Ayoze Perez casts doubt over his Newcastle future just moments after scoring first NUFC hat-trick during the off-season, with a host of La Liga and Serie A clubs expected to be interested in his services.

While Magpies manager Rafa Benitez is desperate to keep hold of Perez, should the 59-year-old remain at St James' Park himself, the forward will wait until after he has allowed himself time to mentally and physically refresh on holiday back in Spain, where he travelled earlier this week, before making a firm decision on his future.

"It's been a great season, ups and downs, better moments, bad moments, but, overall, it's been an unbelievable season," Perez said.

"With 13 goals for myself and finishing 13th, which is something to be proud of, it's been unbelievable. It's a great afternoon for ourselves, and now it's time to enjoy.

"I'm off to Spain [on holiday now]. I'm looking for some sun. Now I'm focused on enjoying my holidays, to rest, because I need it. [Then] we'll see [what happens]."

The Magpies ended the campaign with a magnificent 4-0 victory over Fulham at Craven Cottage last Sunday, with Perez netting the second of United's four goals.

Supporters chanted the forward's name after the game and the players were applauded off the field by the thousands of Newcastle fans who had made the journey down to west London.

"It's such a great way to end the season, with a 4-0 win away from home, with amazing support again," Perez said of the final-day victory over the Cottagers.

"Obviously, I'm very thankful for the support, and to be able to score again and finish on a high. It's been an unbelievable season for the team.

"I always set a target to get better numbers than last season. I could do it, so that means I've done something well.

"I'm so proud and happy to have done it, to be able to help the team scoring goals. I could have scored another one [against Fulham]. The mood in the dressing room has been great."

While Perez's future is likely to remain unclear for at least a few weeks yet, Benitez's Newcastle situation should be clarified in the coming days.

The Spaniard held discussions with owner Mike Ashley and managing director Lee Charnley in London on Thursday, during which Benitez sought assurances over the general ambition of the club, before he will consider signing a contract extension.

Both parties headed into the discussions in a positive frame of mind and, as Perez stresses, the majority of the fanbase and the dressing room are desperate for Benitez to stay beyond June 30, when his current deal expires, with Tyneside eagerly anticipating the outcome of the meeting.

"We all know - everybody in the club, the city, the fans - that everybody wants him to stay," Perez said of Benitez.

"We know how good we can become under Rafa. That's why everybody's asking him to stay. It's not in our hands, but we'll see what happens during the summer."
