Ayoze Perez opens up on his celebration and admits it was a jibe at Newcastle critics

Ayoze Perez has admitted his fingers in the ears celebration was a reaction to Newcastle United fans.

Taking part in a Q & A on social media with Leicester City supporters, Perez was asked about the celebration which has become his trademark.

And he admits it was first cooked up in response to criticism from United supporters last season.

He said: “It was back in the days when I used to play for Newcastle. It was actually last season and I was getting a bit of stick because I didn’t score many goals in the first part of the season.

“So I remember it was a game against Watford when I came on at half-time, if I’m not mistaken and we were 0-0 and I scored with a header and we won the game. As soon as I scored I had that reaction, I didn’t even think about it. It was a reaction and from that day I’m doing that celebration. I like it.”

Perez departed for £30million in the summer after Rafa Benitez departed. He has scored seven times in 21 games for his new club after hitting the net 12 times last season when he was Newcastle’s top scorer.
