Ayoze Perez opens up on difference between playing at Newcastle United and Leicester City

Ayoze Perez admits the way Leicester City are playing is 'very enjoyable' and he was 'surprised' by the quality in the squad when he first started training with his team-mates after leaving Newcastle United.

The Spaniard completed a £30m move to the King Power Stadium last summer after the Foxes triggered the release clause in his contract.

ChronicleLive previously revealed Perez left Newcastle because he felt the Magpies did not want to move to the next level like Leicester did, having privately hoped the 'sleeping giant' would awaken on Tyneside.

Perez, who has been adjusting to a slightly different role out wide, opened his account for Leicester in style with a hat-trick in the record-equaling 9-0 win against Southampton on Friday night, which lifted the Magpies out of the relegation zone.

And, after the game, Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville asked the 26-year-old about how big a difference it was working under Brendan Rodgers at Leicester compared to Rafa Benitez at Newcastle.

"Well, it's different. In this team, we are able to have the ball more times. We are enjoying the ball and it's very different," he said.

"The way we are playing in Leicester is very enjoyable. I'm still adapting a little bit to the team but it went very well this night."

Perez was booed on his return to St James' Park by a section of Newcastle supporters whenever he touched the ball in Leicester's penalty shootout win in the Carabao Cup back in August.

The forward expected that kind of reception given how many fans thought he would leave the club to return to Spain rather than play for another Premier League side.

So, after five years at Newcastle, what has it been like playing with his new team-mates at Leicester?

"I was very surprised when I signed," he added. "The first couple of days when you start training with the lads. I said, 'Wow, this is quality. We've got such a great squad, a big squad.'

"After games, you are able to see what we are capable of. The mentality - we are making sure we think as a top team - and the results are there. It's still a long way to go but we are proving we are a great team."
