Ayoze Perez injury latest as Newcastle United goal hero battles to recover from hip blow

Rafa Benitez is hoping Ayoze Perez will be fit and available for the clash against Liverpool on Saturday night.

The Spaniard had to be replaced in the first half after taking a whack on the hip.

Perez had put United in front to keep up his rich vein of form with five goals in his last three matches.

That took his seasonal tally to 12 overall and he still has the chance to add to it with two games left against Liverpool and Fulham.

Benitez gave an update on his fitness and said: "He took a kick to his hip. Normally it's very painful and we will see in two or three days how he is reacting.

“His understanding with Rondon is quite good.”

United didn’t look as effective when Perez went off before the break.

Benitez said: “We missed him. We were changing because we had a different kind of player when you put another one on.

“He was in form, on fire, and it was a pity when we had a player doing so well, we had to take him out.”
