Ayoze Perez helps pull Magpies out of the relegation zone as Leicester City win 9-0 at Southampton

Newcastle United were given a helping hand out of the relegation zone on Friday night without kicking a ball.

The Magpies moved up to fourth bottom in the Premier League after Leicester City equalled the Premier League's biggest ever win with a 9-0 goal demolition job against Southampton on the South Coast.

Former United star Ayoze Perez was one of the heroes for the Foxes as he scored his first goals for the club since his £30million move from Newcastle.

Jamie Vardy also grabbed a treble while Ben Chilwell, Youri Tielmans and James Maddison piled on the misery for Southampton as Leicester ran riot.

The win dented Southampton's goal difference to put them on minus 16 which allowed Newcastle to unexpectedly leapfrog the Saints.

After the game Perez told Sky Sports: "It took a while to score here but I knew once I had my first one goals would keep coming."

Perez also spoke of playing in a wide position as opposed to the number 10 role he played at Newcastle.

He added: "I am still adapting to this position.

"I am used to playing in between the lines.

"I have been wide and it is different.

"But I have been working to improve."

United can now put some daylight between themselves and the bottom three if they beat Wolves and Norwich lose to Man United on Super Sunday.
