Axemen smash into Co-op before using Range Rover to rip cash machine off its wall in Manchester city centre

Thieves used a Range Rover Sport to rip a cash machine out of a Manchester city centre shop at 5am.

They hooked the ATM up to the rear of the powerful 4x4 with an industrial chain and pulled it clear.

The drama happened at a branch of Co-op on Bridge Street in Manchester city centre on Wednesday morning.

It is believed the thieves used an axe to smash the front of the store before attaching a metal chain to a cash machine just inside the entrance.

It has not been revealed how much cash was stolen.

The shop, just a few yards from Manchester Crown Court, was cordoned off this morning as police started an investigation.

Officers are trawling CCTV cameras which cover the area and have appealed for any witnesses to come forward.

No-one has yet been arrested.

A spokeswoman for Greater Manchester Police said: "Police were called around 4.50am this morning (Wednesday 31 March) to reports of a burglary at a Co-op on Bridge Street in Manchester.

"Officers attended and established that the shop front had been smashed, and a cash machine stolen.

"It is believed a silver Range Rover Sport was used to tow chain and drag the cash machine away.

"No arrests have been made and enquiries are going."
