Axel Tuanzebe rejoins Aston Villa on loan after extending Manchester United contract

Axel Tuanzebe has extended his Manchester United contract before joining Aston Villa on a season-long loan.

The central defender has signed a new deal that runs until 2023 with the option of an extra year, before signing for the Midlands side on loan for the upcoming Premier League season.

Tuanzebe 's previous contract was due to expire next summer with the option to add an extra year but the 24-year-old defender has agreed a new contract to add an extra season on to that deal before leaving for Villa.

He previously had two loan spells at Villa Park in 2018 and 2019, helping to guide Villa to promotion to the Premier League with some excellent performances in the Championship before returning to Old Trafford to compete for a first-team place under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

However injuries have halted his development and with the addition of Raphael Varane to the squad this summer, the decision was made to allow Tuanzebe to leave for more regular football.

The former England youth international has been restricted to just 29 appearances over the last two seasons due to injury, but has shown his talent in top level performances against the likes of Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League.

It's believed that Villa boss Dean Smith sees Tuanzebe as the perfect competition for his squad at both centre-back and right-back, while he has also played as a holding midfielder in the past and can provide cover there.

Tuanzebe has gone straight into the Villa squad and is on the bench for their pre-season game against Salernitana, and could play against Watford at the weekend in the Premier League.
