Axe-wielding thug threatened to 'cave' in partner's head amid terrifying outburst

A violent thug with his eyes "popping out of his head" threatened to "cave" his girlfriend's head during a drug-fuelled frenzy that left her "frightened to death".

Corey Taylor's behaviour during the crazed outburst was "terrifying, bullying, violent and completely and utterly out of all proportion" as he wrecked havoc in his partner's property and smashed his way through a bay window to escape.

Following the "petrifying" confrontation, the 24-year-old was arrested by police - but was able to wriggle free from his handcuffs, Hull Live reports. The defendant then took off from the scene and was on the run for 10 hours before officers were able to detain him, Hull Crown Court heard.

Taylor, of Strathmore Avenue, Hull, admitted escaping from lawful custody, affray, possessing an axe, breaching a restraining order and two offences of criminal damage.

Benjamin Donnell, prosecuting, said that Taylor's girlfriend was at her Hull home at 6.45am on March 28 when he went there.

She noticed that he was under the influence of drugs and his "eyes were popping out of his head". His behaviour was erratic and he was "in a rage". An argument broke out about Taylor's drug taking and she told him to leave.

He kicked the front door, snapping the key in the lock and causing the door to become stuck. He went back upstairs with a 30cm-long blue axe that had been kept in the kitchen and told the woman: "Before I leave, I'm going to smash the house up." He also said: "How about I cave your head in with this axe and then the police can arrest me?"

Taylor twice punched a mirror, breaking it, but then "bizarrely" hugged his girlfriend and told her: "Oh, don't get like this." She asked her grandfather to telephone the police because she was too scared to do so herself and she could hear the noise of windows being smashed in the kitchen. She later did call the police herself. Her cousin arrived.

Taylor smashed his way through a living room bay window and left with the axe, heading onto a neighbour's shed and greenhouse, causing damage. He picked up a brick and threw it at another window of his girlfriend's home, causing damage.

"He made good his escape," said Mr Donnell. Police arrived at a house in Limedane, Orchard Park estate, the next day to arrest Taylor and found him asleep in bed.

They woke him and put handcuffs on before taking him downstairs. The door was open and Taylor stepped outside, with a police officer still holding him using the handcuffs.

Suddenly and without warning, Taylor pulled away and ran off. He was chased but could not be caught. On March 30, police received information that he was at the home of his ex-girlfriend, the mother of his three-year-old daughter, in Haydock Garth and went there.

The ex-girlfriend told him: "Corey, just give yourself up." He was arrested. "This time, he was successfully transported into police custody," said Mr Donnell. "There was 10 hours between his escape and the time of his arrest."

The handcuffs that had been put on the previous day were found damaged. "Presumably, the defendant had damaged the handcuffs to get them off him," said Mr Donnell.

Taylor had gone to his ex-girlfriend's home in breach of a restraining order.

His other girlfriend said of the criminal damage incident: "This has made me feel frightened to death. I don't want to be in this house at all and am scared in case he comes back. I feel like he has held me hostage in my own home.

"I am scared he will come back and do this again at any time. I don't feel safe here any more." The incident was "petrifying" for her.

Taylor had convictions for 18 previous offences dating back to 2016. They included witness intimidation, harassment and criminal damage.

Dale Brook, mitigating, said that there was nothing sophisticated about the escape. "When he was arrested, he fled," said Mr Brook. "He just ran. It was spur of the moment. It was an opportune running from the police.

"He was away for 10 hours. That doesn't reflect well on him. It was quite obviously a short time in comparison to several weeks where other defendants have gone missing."

Taylor was immature and the argument with his girlfriend broke out after he took Class A drugs. "She didn't like that, they had an argument about it and it led to him behaving in this appalling fashion," said Mr Brook.

Taylor was "inadequate and incapable of dealing with the complexities of a relationship" but, when he was released from prison, he wanted to work. "The day he is released, he is going to sign on with job agencies and take whatever work is available," said Mr Brook.

Judge Sophie McKone told Taylor: "You subjected your partner to a very frightening ordeal. You were in her home with an axe.

"You had an argument and, for reasons only you know, presumably because you were under the influence of drugs, you proceeded to smash up her property with the axe that you had with you and also your fists. You smashed glass in her door and her window.

"You threatened to put the axe in her head. You cynically tried to hug her. She was, in her words, frightened to death during that sustained ordeal.

"Your behaviour was terrifying, bullying, violent and completely and utterly out of all proportion to the argument you were having. You ran off from the police.

"I accept this was a spur of the moment decision and no violence was used. You were found about 10 hours later in the address of the mother of your child."

Taylor was jailed for two years and two months.
