Axe hangs over East Kilbride flagship Debenhams store as company on brink of collapse

The flagship Debenhams store in East Kilbride is on the brink of collapse due to the coronavirus crisis putting dozens of jobs at risk.

Company bosses confirmed this morning that it has filed a notice of intent to appoint administrators.

The Centre West store had already shut its doors as a result of the lockdown.

It sees around 22,000 jobs and 142 stores at risk across the country as the retailer becomes the latest casualty of the pandemic.

A Debenhams statement said the move is a “necessary step” to protect the firm from the threat of legal action from creditors.

It is a possibility that such action would come from suppliers – which could push the retailer into liquidation.

But it has continued to trade online and customer orders, gift cards and returns are being accepted and processed normally.

A spokesperson for EK, East Kilbride, said: “The latest news about Debenhams is clearly concerning however, we are in active discussions to try and help the business long term.

"The retail industry has been facing challenging market conditions over the past few years and the current coronavirus situation has increased the pressure on this and other industries still further.  Like all non essential retailers at EK, East Kilbride, Debenhams remains closed at present.”
