AWOL Rangers flop Carlos Pena sets up football academy despite being posted missing from current club

Rangers flop Carlos Pena has set up his own football academy for kids in his Mexican homeland - despite being in football limbo.

The controversial Mexican international, signed at Ibrox by Pedro Caixinha two years ago, has gone AWOL from second division Polish outfit GKS Tychy because of a dispute over his wages.

Despite signing for them in March, he has yet to kick a ball in Poland after an initial work permit problem and his last game was in October last year for Necaxa.

His contract at Rangers was terminated by mutual consent after two disastrous loan spells in Mexico blighted by alcohol problems.

GKS Tychy insisted last month Pena was in breach of contract and they would only agree to let him rip up his contract if he paid the rest of it up.

But the 29-year-old appears to have spent his time in Mexico starting a new project.

He's set up the Carlos Pena Soccer Academy in Santa Cruz Tlaxcala, which aims to be a feeder club for Leon - one of his former teams.

Pena said: "I'm delighted to be involved in this interesting project.

"It will help the children of Tiaxcala fulfil their talent.

"I've received great support from this project from the region and we are now recruiting for the Academy."
