Awkward moment Melania Trump 'swerves' a kiss from US President after speech

An awkward attempted kiss between US President Donald Trump and his wife Melania could be yet another sign of the contempt she holds him in, eagle-eyed viewers believe.

The US First Lady appears to swerve to avoid kissing Trump on the lips after delivering a campaign speech.

It is the latest in a string of uncomfortable appearances the two have made as a couple in public ever since his surprise win in the 2016 presidential election.

As Trump leans in for a kiss, Melania seems to move her head and offer him her cheek.

It didn't go unnoticed, with onlookers offering their views.

“Melania turns her face when Trump goes to give her a kiss, she couldn’t even hide her disgust for the photo," one wrote on Twitter.

Another said: “She completely moved her face when he went for the lips. What a swerve.”

Last week the First Lady appeared to swat her husband's hand away as they both walked off Air Force One.

The latest incident happened after she gave a speech in Washington voicing sympathy for coronavirus victims and calling for racial understanding - things her husband has repeatedly been accused of failing to do.

Trump's wife acknowledged the pain of the pandemic in sharp contrast to most other speakers at the Republican Party's national convention.

More than 178,000 people have died in the US since the start of the pandemic.

"I want to acknowledge the fact that since March, our lives have changed drastically," Melania Trump told a crowd seated in the White House Rose Garden.

"My deepest sympathy goes out to everyone who has lost a loved one.

"And my prayers are with those who are ill or suffering. I know many people are anxious and some feel helpless.

"I want you to know: You're not alone."

She also reflected on the racial unrest that has swept the country in the months since the police killing of George Floyd.

Melania said: "I urge people to come together in a civil manner so we can work and live up to our standard American ideals."
