'Awful' - Nottingham Forest fans disagree with pundits over Nicholas Ioannou red card against Luton Town

Nottingham Forest fans disagreed with pundits Mick McCarthy and Jobi McAnuff over the sending off of Nicholas Ioannou against Luton Town.

The Reds left-back was dismissed late in the first half for a tackle on Martin Cranie which got the ball, but his studs followed through into the Luton defender's shin.

At the break, McCarthy told Sky Sports: "I don't think he meant to do it. There's no doubt, especially in this day and age. He could have hurt him there."

Fellow pundit McAnuff added: "I've got a bit of sympathy. It was a genuine attempt. We see it so many times.

"He loses control of the ball and tries to redeem it. His foot skips off the top of the ball and goes into Cranie's shin. Definite red."

Co-commentator Don Goodman also felt the Cypriot defender should have been sent-off.

Forest already trailed 1-0 to Glen Rea's goal. Here's what Forest fans made of the red card on Twitter.

Jake Cheetham : No way that is a red

Chris Beecroft : Once again the officiating in the championship is awful, never a red card. Games gone

Benj_NFFC: I hope that opens the door for Ribeiro

James Bolton : Not convinced that is a red card at all. Only makes contact with the man because his foot rolls up the ball. If you listened to Don Gooman (which very few people do) you’d think he’d snapped his leg in two

TJR McKay: Deserved red!!!!! We would be screaming to have him off if it was one of there’s!!!

Alan Macleod : Stupid tackle but actually looked a lot worse than it was, Luton player made a complete meal of it and the ref fell for it

David Nicholson: Biggest positive out of the first half is that we might see Yuri Ribeiro back in a forest shirt!

Steve: Awful reffing 50 50 ball and Luton player cons ref. Ioannou actually got the ball.

Taylor J Last: Never a red, gets the ball. Doesn't even touch the Luton players leg that he's holding. Also not 2 footed. A 50/50 challenge
