'Awful!' - Chelsea fans cannot believe what happened between Ethan Ampadu and Franck Ribery

Chelsea fans have been left shocked at Ethan Ampadu’s red card for Venezia on Tuesday evening.

Playing for Venezia against newly-promoted Salernitana, the Welshman originally started on the bench but was introduced in the second half for Mattia Aramu.

With the scores level at 1-1, his contributions did not last particularly long as he was awarded a straight red card for a challenge on former Bayern Munich icon Franck Ribery.

The Chelsea man was left baffled at the decision to be given his marching orders, even more so with replays showing that the challenge was timed to perfection.

Ampadu’s anguish then continued as VAR intervened to check the decision, with the red card then being upheld.

The punishment was not quite finished for his adopted employers, however, as Salernitana netted a 95th-minute winner to steal the three points through Andrea Schiavone.

Following the game, Chelsea fans took to Twitter to express their thoughts on Ampadu’s sending off.

Despite Ampadu’s somewhat perplexing sending-off, the young midfielder appears to be developing a trend of somewhat questionable discipline with his new club.

As it stands, the 21-year-old has now picked up four yellow cards and a red in just five appearances for the Serie A outfit. In just 12 outings for the Blues, Ampadu was only ever booked once - in a Carabao Cup fourth-round tie against Bournemouth back in 2017.

Following defeat, Venezia now sit 16th in the Serie A standings after ten games and just a solitary point above the relegation zone.
