Awesome Annie plays a big part in charity fundraiser after devastating cancer diagnosis and life-altering surgery

An Ayrshire woman who underwent life-altering surgery after a cancer diagnosis has played a big part in her gym’s fitness challenge for a local charity.

Annie Atkins went under the surgeon’s knife in November following a perforated bowel and sepsis- caused by a large tumour.

However, despite enduring chemotherapy and now living with a permanent stoma, determined Annie took part in the gruelling challenge which involved a 6K row, 6K ski-erg, 6K assault bike, 666 squats, 666 press-ups, and 666 sit-ups.

It was an arduous task that demanded unwavering determination and resilience, but Annie sailed through with flying colours.

The challenge, conceived by Clyde Coast CrossFit (Ayr) owner Kevin Wesson and member Annie, was aimed at raising funds for Ayrshire Cancer Support.

And thanks to the sterling efforts of the Clyde Coast Cross Fit team they raised more than £2,000.

Annie from Ayr, a decorated indoor rowing champion, coach, and world record holder, took the challenge head-on and completed it in an impressive time of 2 hours and 40 minutes.

Reflecting on the event, Annie said: “I know it was a hell of a challenge to take on, but it pales in comparison to the daily battles and obstacles that cancer can bring, not just for the patients but also for their families and friends.

“That’s where Ayrshire Cancer Support steps in, offering an incredible range of support and services, from free transportation to treatment to grief counselling.”

Annie continued: “I am a firm believer in the benefits of exercise during cancer treatment, and I consider myself incredibly fortunate to have coaches like Kevin and Richard, who provide unwavering support and encouragement. The CrossFit community, too, has showered me with immense support and kindness.”

Kevin expressed his gratitude to all who supported, saying: “With one in two individuals facing cancer, the impact of this disease touches us all in some way- whether personally experiencing it, witnessing a loved one battle it, or, as I recently experienced with the loss of my own father, grieving its toll. It’s a privilege to support Ayrshire Cancer Support and their outstanding work.

“Additionally, we are proud to stand by one of our athletes during her most challenging times.”

Ayrshire Cancer Support would like to express their sincere gratitude to all members of Clyde Coast CrossFit in Ayr who completed the fitness challenge, all in the name of raising funds for the charity.
