Awareness days organised for kids after tablets that 'look like sweets' found by playground in Dublin

Concerned residents have organised an awareness day for their kids after a bag of "sweet-like" tablets were found near a playground in Dublin city centre.

The proactive locals have now decided not to take any chances and are in discussion to hold an awareness day to warn kids of the dangers.

Speaking to Dublin Live, local Sinn Feinn Councillor Janice Boylan warned everyone to be vigilant saying the issue "could have been much worse" had an adult not found the bag first.

She said: "At all times everywhere kids and parents should be vigilant of things like this happening.

"Unfortunately the flat complexes are areas where drug dealers happen and unfortunately for those good residents things like this happen.

"She found them right beside the child's playground and if hadn't of been for her it could've been much much worse.

"They look like sweets. We do need to raise awareness."

She went on to say that she'll be holding an awareness day for the kids along with Grainne Foy of the North West Inner City Network, and gardai.

She said: "It'll just be a little chat with all the kids in the flats. Mammies and Daddies can be there too, and it'll just be to remind them of dangers.

"It's not just the flat complexes, it's everywhere."

She also praised locals for not taking any chances in bringing the issue to the forefront and not taking chances.

She said: "They're a great group down there and they act quickly on everything.

"They're always very interested in keeping things clean and safe because obviously they want it to be like that for their children.

"They're a good, committed community, and they're very interested in and want to make sure everyone is safe and drug dealing stops in the complexes because unfortunately that's what's happening."

Independent Councillor Christy Burke also commented on the tablets, blasting the person who owns them as "totally irresponsible and a dullard".

He said: "Between heroin, cocaine, ecstasy tablets, sleeping tablets, anybody that leaves anything in any place is totally irresponsible and a dullard.

"They have absolutely no respect for man, woman, or child, but that goes with the territory.

"So I would echo words of caution, and well done to the community for their proactive response.

"Of course if you see something like this call the authorities and DCC will come out and collect and dispose of anything hazardous.

"Please be cautious, because there's danger in the streets, and the people who use and abuse this system don't care."
