Award-winning tenant jailed over threatening Tesco security guard with knife

An award-winning tenant has been jailed for eight months after he threatened a Tesco security guard with a knife.

Defendant Rupert Fogo, 60, has won £100 three years on the trot for being a responsible tenant, Nottingham Crown Court heard.

But a judge heard about a different side to him where he told the superstore guard to "just leave it big man" when a suspected shoplifter was challenged.

Fogo's associate, a woman, is believed to have stolen meat from the Carlton store at 3.50pm on February 11.

The lady threw some items back at the security guard as she moved away with Fogo.

They ran up Foxhill Road together. Fogo seemed to take a knife from his pocket.

Then the guard abandoned the chase, returning to Tesco and reporting the theft of the meat to community support officers.

Fogo was found with various items of meat, worth nearly £100 and linked to the theft by the unidentified lady associate, and a lock knife.

Nottingham Crown Court heard he had a conviction from 2009 for having a stanley knife in Alfreton Road, as well as a substantial criminal record.

As he was sentenced, Recorder David Herbert QC gave him the eight months for possessing an offensive weapon and one month concurrently for handling stolen meat.

And he told Fogo, of Sullivan Close, St Ann's, he produced the knife and used it as a threat to prevent himself from being followed.

As a result, the guard abandoned the pursuit, and the judge said. "You were arrested and found in possession of stolen meat and that lock knife.

"Not only did you produce the knife, you threatened a man who was doing his job essentially in a public place, and you have a previous conviction for possessing a weapon".

David Watts, mitigating, said Fogo has a council flat in his own name and had won three awards of £100 for being "the responsible tenant of the year for the last three years".
