Award-winning coffee shop chain to open new Bristol city centre site in old bank

An award-winning coffee shop chain is opening a new Bristol city centre site in a former bank.

Family-run Society Café started life in Bath, where it has two sites, before expanding into Oxford, and in 2017 it opened a Bristol café next to Pero’s Bridge on Narrow Quay.

The cafés specialise in specialty coffee from small roasters such as Bath’s Round Hill and Cornwall’s Origin roastery, as well as loose leaf teas and cakes and pastries from local bakeries.

Owners Jane and Adrian Campbell-Howard previously worked around the world in the restaurant and hotel business.

Jane worked for celebrity chef Marco Pierre White and then catered for the Formula 1 team, while Adrian ran a top restaurant in Hong Kong.

The couple then ran Dial House Hotel in the Cotswolds, which went on to win many awards including Which? Hotel of the Year and when they sold it in 2008, they ran the El Fenn hotel in Marrakech, which is owned by Richard Branson’s family.

And now Jane and Adrian have revealed details of their second and biggest Bristol site.

The new Society Café will be in the former Santander bank on the ground floor of Alliance House, on the junction of Baldwin Street and Broad Quay.

Work has already started on transforming the old bank, which was recently used as the showroom for the new apartments above.

Jane Campbell-Howard said: “We’re so excited about our second Bristol site, on Baldwin Street.

“It feels exhilarating to be coming out of an incredibly challenging 18 months with a new Society Café on the horizon.

“An old bank, it’s a brilliant space and we’re working with the talented Bristol-based Shape Studio to create a really beautiful and relaxing shop.”

There is no confirmed opening date for the new Society Café.
