Award-winning Beeston shop set to close due to 'uncertain times'

Chimera, an award-winning shop and community hub in Beeston, will be closing next month due to "uncertain times."

The shop, which scooped Retailer of the Year in the Best of Broxtowe Borough Awards 2016, specialises in board games, comics and collectables.

Players, some of them travelling for miles, gather for trading card tournaments and role play days.

Andy and Heather Leach, who run the shop in High Road, said: "Times are changing and Chimera is changing with the times.

"Our lease is up and it is not viable to renew this in these uncertain times," said the couple in an announcement on the shop's Facebook page.

"You are all invited to join us for a day of partying and games to celebrate the end of an era and the start of a new one."

The last day of trading will be Sunday, October 6.

For the foreseeable future the business will be run from a warehouse in Bilborough. It won't be open to the general public but customers will be able to order home deliveries online.

The couple added: "Many thanks to all of our customers, who have become our friends and our community throughout the years. We will no doubt see you at some of our 'Out of the Box' events, which will be announced in conjunction with some other local venues shortly."

A sale is underway with bargains to be had and some items half price.

Chimera began with a tiny shop in Ripley but became so popular that it outgrew its premises and moved to Beeston.

During its time in Beeston, Chimera had a visit from comedian and Labour supporter Eddie Izzard during the 2015 General Election campaign trail and the shop was mentioned in The Sunday Times guide to Britain's Super Suburbs, saying it added to the town's "alternative vibe."

Chimera's fans are gutted about the closure. Russell Lawson responded to the closure announcement on Facebook, saying: "Terrible news. Thank you so much for welcoming Jacob and I and giving us so many hours of fun. You will be missed more than you know."
