Award for mother finding words after her baby loss

An Evening Standard advertising executive has won an award for her work raising awareness of baby loss.

Katie Ingram launched her #NoWords campaign a year after the death of her daughter Ottilie who was still-born in 2019.

Her work on the campaign, which aims to help people find the words to talk about loss, was praised for its “passion and commitment”.

The 45-year-old from Barnet said it was about “supporting people and literally finding the words where there are none”.

She said: “No Words came from a couple of things but one of them was the amount of people who said to me ‘There are no words, I don’t know what to say’. The other thing is we understand ‘orphan’, we understand ‘widow’, we understand those words mean you have lost someone. But there isn’t a word that describes a parent who has lost a child.”

Katie, who is working with the People Team at the Evening Standard on developing policies around baby loss, won a Future is Female award at Advertising Week Europe 2023.

The awards recognise 10 women making their mark on the advertising industry. She said the birth of her second daughter, Noa, had reinforced the need to be open about the issue.

She said: “If somebody says ‘How many children do you have?’ because I now have a living daughter as well, I don’t have a word to use to describe myself so I have to tell the story.”
