Award for farmers who live streamed animals to lift nation's spirits during lockdown

Two farmers who “fortified the nation’s spirits” by broadcasting live streams of their animals have been awarded the Prime Minister’s Points of Light Award for helping their community.

Brothers Rob and David Nicholson, of Cannon Hall Farm, were praised by Boris Johnson for their daily videos, which have been viewed by more than seven million people during the lockdown.

The farm featured in the Sunday People two weeks ago.

Mr Johnson said: “Your ingenuity has fortified the nation’s spirits as we continue our fight against coronavirus.

"To do this while running a working farm is wonderful and testament to the dedication of Britain’s farmers, which you exemplify. On behalf of the country, thank you.”

The farm, in Barnsley, South Yorks, has shown lambs and goats being born and now features on Channel 5.

Rob said: “We are honoured the Prime Minister has recognised us.

"We said from the start if we could help one person, that would have been enough.

"We’d never have expected that 13 weeks after we began, we’d be broadcasting to thousands of people a day globally, helping them through this tough time.”

  • This Week on The Farm, Tuesday, Channel 5, 8pm.
