Avram Glazer prepares to create 'Manchester United cricket team'

Manchester United's co-chairman Avram Glazer appears to be preparing to launch the 'Manchester United cricket team' in the United Arab Emirates.

According to a tweet by Sheikh Mansoor bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the chairman of the Dubai Sports Council, it appears as though Glazer is about to create United's own cricket team. He tweeted: "I met with Avram Glazer, co-chairman of Manchester United, today and discussed ways to work together to further raise Dubai’s profile as a global sporting hub.

"We also discussed the UAE T20 Cricket league’s launch in January 2023 featuring Manchester United cricket team and other teams." Back in December, MEN Sport revealed that Glazer had bought a UAE T20 team after failing to purchase an Indian Premier League (IPL) side.

Commenting last year, Glazer expressed his pleasure at achieving ownership status of one of six teams who will compete in the UAE. He said: "I am very excited to be a part of UAE T20 at its formation.

"UAE T20 promises to be a world-class event that will be transformative to the growth of cricket in the Emirates."

No name for the team was announced at the time, however Mohammed's post suggests that the team will be named after the Old Trafford club. Glazer also owns the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the NFL.
