Avonmouth recycling centre closed after explosion

Avonmouth recycling centre will be closed over the weekend following the explosion at the Wessex Water treatment plant.

Both the Wessex Water site and the recycling centre are based in Kings Weston Road.

Bristol Water closed the centre following the explosion and it will remain shut until Monday at the earliest (December 7).

A further update will be provided next week as to whether the centre will reopen.

The St Philips recycling centre, in Days Road, will remain open over the weekend.

In a statement posted on their social media channels, Bristol Waste said: “Our Avonmouth Recycling Centre, Reuse Shop and Commercial Waste services remain closed this weekend following the incident in the area. We will provide an update next week.

“Our Days Road site is open for residents, the number plate system is in place.”

Police confirmed yestedat that four people had died in the explosion at the plant, which happened at around 11.20am, and one further person was injured.

Tributes have already been placed at the scene around the police cordon. Flowers and heartfelt messages have been placed at the scene of the explosion by mourners.
