Avonmouth explosion: Warning siren test cancelled after blast

The Severnside Sirens will not be sounded today following a large explosion at Wessex Water’s Bristol water recycling centre in Avonmouth.

The sirens are usually tested at 3pm on the third day of every month.

However, in light of the incident in King’s Weston Lane, the test has been cancelled today and the sirens will not be sounded.

A statement on the Severnside Sirens Trust website reads: “A report of a large explosion in a warehouse on Kings Weston Lane, in Avonmouth, is not thought to be associated with a COMAH (Controls of Major Accident Hazards) site.

“A decision has been made not to sound the sirens today.”

Multiple people have been injured following the blast at 11.20am this morning (Wednesday 3 December) at Wessex Water’s Bristol water recycling centre.

Police confirmed there have been 'a number of casualties'.

Chief Inspector Mark Runacres said: “Officers remain at the scene and are likely to be for some time as we work together with other agencies in dealing with this major incident.

“A cordon has been set up and we’d advise members of the public to avoid the area at this time where possible to allow the emergency services to carry out their work.

“Police enquiries into exactly what happened are at a very early stage and are continuing.”
