Avonmouth explosion: MP reacts to 'second serious incident' in as many weeks

The MP for the Avonmouth area has issued a statement in response to the news of the 'serious explosion' in the area.

Emergency services were called to the area at 11.22am and are currently at the scene. You can follow our liveblog here.

The fire service currently has six crews at the scene of this ongoing incident.

Avon Fire & Rescue Service - who is leading on this incident - has said there have been multiple people injured in the explosion and that they were still looking for people.

A helicopter has also been seen landing at the scene.

Darren Jones, the MP for Bristol North West, has said: "Thank you to our police, ambulance and fire services for responding so quickly to this serious explosion in Avonmouth this morning.

"This is the second serious incident in Avonmouth in as many weeks.

"Once our emergency services have resolved this incident and helped any injured workers, I’ll be calling on the Environment Agency, the Health and Safety Regulator and others to ensure lessons are being learnt for the future."

In October, 20,000 tonnes of scrap metal were involved in a fire at the Avonmouth Docks near the M5 motorway.

In a statement earlier, Avon Fire & Rescue Service said: "We have been called to a large explosion at 11.22am in a warehouse in Avonmouth.

"Crews from Avonmouth, Southmead, Yate, Patchway, Kingswood and Temple are currently attending.

"We are joined by Avon and Somerset Police and Ambulance on site."

The ambulance service has also issued a statement about what has happened.
