Avonmouth Explosion: Incident is being scaled down

Emergency crews have now scaled down their response after a waste water works explosion earlier today.

Some crews remain at the scene, but the number of officers has been reduced.

There have been “multiple casualties” after the blast at a Wessex Water site on Kings Weston Lane, at around 11.22am (December 3).

However, Bristol Live is awaiting further updates on the severity of the injuries of those hurt.

A spokesperson for Avon Fire & Rescue Service said: "A number of our engines have left but we still have some on site.

"The incident has been handed to police."

Witness Jawad Burhan took a photo showing a tank that had exploded after the blast.

He told the PA news agency there was a “helicopter looking for missing people” and police had closed a nearby road leading up to the building, which he believed was a waste centre.

“I heard the sound, I’m working beside the building in another warehouse. After ten minutes I saw the helicopter coming and the police,” he said.

Avon Fire & Rescue Service - who is leading on this incident - had previously said there have been multiple people injured in the explosion and that they were still looking for people.

A helicopter was also seen landing at the scene.
