Avonmouth explosion: Eye-witness describes moment of blast

An eye-witness to the large explosion in Avonmouth has described the moment the blast hit.

Multiple people have been injured following the blast at 11.20am this morning (Thursday, December 3) at Wessex Water’s Bristol water recycling centre.

Kieran Jenkins, who had been working nearby, said that he and a colleague had heard an explosion and seen people running from the scene.

“We were inside the warehouse, the whole warehouse was shaking and we literally stood there in shock,” he told BBC News.

“Next thing you know we looked out of the windows and all we could see was people running.

“We don’t know what happened. It was a bit of a shock really.

“Fingers crossed nobody was hurt and everything is alright.

“I heard a bang… we didn’t know what was going on.”

Police confirmed there have been 'a number of casualties'.

Chief Inspector Mark Runacres said: “Officers remain at the scene and are likely to be for some time as we work together with other agencies in dealing with this major incident.

“A cordon has been set up and we’d advise members of the public to avoid the area at this time where possible to allow the emergency services to carry out their work.
