Avonmouth explosion: Bristol Port issues statement as it flies flag at half-mast

Bristol Port is flying its flag at half-mast today in memory of the four people who lost their lives in Avonmouth.

Emergency services rushed to the waste water treatment works yesterday morning (December 3) following an explosion.

Police later confirmed three Wessex Water workers and a contractor died in the blast, while another person was injured.

Today, Bristol Port issued a statement offering their condolences to those in mourning.

A spokesperson said: "On behalf of everyone at The Bristol Port Company, from our Shareholders to Stevedores, we offer our heartfelt thoughts and condolences to everyone involved and in particular the four families who will now not be able to celebrate Christmas with their loved ones.

"But also we are thinking of those people dealing with the aftermath of this tragedy and this is a further timely reminder to the thanks we owe to our emergency services and their unstinting bravery and selfless commitment.

"Today we are flying our St Andrew’s Flag at half-mast in memory of those that lost their lives yesterday."

Wessex Water is working with Health and Safety Executive in launching an investigation into the cause of the explosion.

Both the police and Bristol mayor, Marvin Rees, have confirmed there is no risk to public safety.
