Avonmouth Docks fire: 20,000 tonnes of scrap metal involved in blaze near M5

The fire service has confirmed as much as 20,000 tonnes of scrap metal is involved in the fire at Avonmouth Docks.

Avon Fire and Rescue Service have been at the scene on St Andrews Road near the M5 motorway, tackling fire which appears to have broken out in a heap of scrap metal.

Residents in the surrounding area have been advised to remain indoors where possible and keep their doors and windows closed as a result of the heavy smoke, which is reportedly affecting areas as far away as Thornbury in South Gloucestershire.

The information shared by the service indicates the incident was first reported late last night (October 4), with the blaze being reported via traffic and fire services publicly at around 5.30am this morning.

The statement, posted to social media this morning, said: "At 22:41, crews were mobilised to reports of a fire.

"On arrival, crews found a fire involving 20,000 tonnes of scrap metal. The incident is ongoing and there are high levels of smoke as far as Thornbury. Please close windows and doors in the area.

"The incident is on St Andrews Road. Bristol Port and Highways England are aware and monitoring roads in the local area."

Fire services confirmed to our reporter at the scene that five appliances are currently dealing with the incident and that it is ongoing.

Avonmouth station manager Neil Stradling said the wind direction was "unlikely to change" at the present time, meaning only those areas currently affected by the heavy smoke were likely to be, but that could potentially change.

It was also said that the duration of the operation is unknown in terms of when it might be finished and the area cleared.
