Avoniel bonfire site searched after bomb scare

The Avoniel bonfire site was searched by police after a telephoned bomb warning.

Nothing was found and the site has reopened.

Also today Jamie Bryson, one of the spokesmen for East Belfast Cultural Collective (EBBC), said that police have informed him that they are aware of a threat to his life.

A police spokesman said they "carried out a search after information was received that suggested a suspicious object may have been left in the area". They confirmed "nothing was found".

Robert Girvin, from EBBC, told Belfast Live: "We aided and abetted police evacuating the site... and we blocked the entrances. The dogs came in, police did their search and there was nothing found."

Speaking about the death threat, Jamie Bryson said that he wasn't taking it seriously.

He said: "We're not interested in the negativity or the provacation. As far as we're concerned we're getting on with enjoying the celebrations. I think loyalists have conducted themselves impeccably all week and they will continue to do so."
